Make scanned PDFs accessible

Mote spots scanned PDFs and adds a real text layer with OCR, so Read Aloud, the Dictionary, Translation and screen readers all work on them.

What this feature does:

Make scanned PDFs accessible detects when a PDF is a scan or is otherwise inaccessible, and prompts you to run OCR. Choose the document's language, and Mote adds an invisible, selectable text layer over the scanned pages without changing how the page looks.

Once it has run, the whole toolkit works on the document: Play Page reads it aloud, the Dictionary looks up any word, Translation handles a passage, and the Screen Mask cuts the glare. It can also be searched and used with a screen reader.

Why it matters:

  • Scanned worksheets are invisible to screen readers and Read Aloud. OCR makes them accessible
  • Mote flags the problem automatically instead of leaving you to guess why a PDF won't read
  • Turns a static scan into a searchable, selectable, accessible document
